The Way I See It

Be the Person

I recently read these inspiring words of wisdom by Lori Deschene, and I thought you would enjoy it as well:

“Be the person who breaks the cycle. If you were judged, choose understanding. If you were rejected, choose acceptance. If you were shamed, choose compassion. Be the person you needed when you were hurting, not the person who hurt you. Vow to be better than what broke you—to heal instead of becoming bitter so you can act from your heart, not your pain.”

Here’s the way I see it: Every morning, we get a chance to be different. A chance to change. A chance to be better. Don’t miss your chance!

Preflighting: The Perfect Launch
COME FLY WITH ME

NASA has always understood the importance of a preflight checklist to ensure all systems are functional prior to launching its multi-billion dollar space missions. One small glitch can cost them more than they bargained for. The concept is similar with your printing projects. While your document may look snazzy on screen, you may not be able to see small issues with your fonts, colors, and images that can at worst, ruin your print project, or at least, make our production crew pull their hair out. For example, if a graphic has enough resolution to look great on screen, but not enough resolution to look as great in print, you might end up with something that looks more like the first image in the comparison below.

The best way to save our production crew's hair and to come off looking like a pro is to preflight your documents and files before you hand them over. This will ensure there are no output issues. Luckily, Adobe InDesign has a built-in feature that allows you to preflight while you work by importing any required production rules (a.k.a. Profiles) and doing a few simple, quality checks.

To access the Preflight panel in InDesign, select Choose Window > Output > Preflight and make sure that "On" is selected and that your designated Profile is chosen. Equipped with super-hero powers, our team can help you come up with the perfect Preflight Profile for your work. This will allow you to check for output errors while you're working. If you've already started working on your document, you may see a red light indicating one or more errors are present. At this point, you have 30 seconds to find them before your document self-destructs...kidding.

What the error message indicates is that InDesign has just checked your document against the Preflight Profile and has noted some issues that need to be addressed so that your print project looks as fabulous on paper as it does on your screen. Some issues that the Preflight Basic Profile will check for include:

  • Missing fonts
  • Overset text
  • Missing graphics files
  • Low-resolution graphics

However, as we said before, you can import custom Profiles that will scan your document for customized issues that need to be addressed, like only using CMYK colors. Basically, anything that is specified in the Preflight Profile will be cross-checked against your document, allowing you to address output issues on the spot.

We'd be happy to help you build the perfect Preflight Profiles that match our production workflow. Handing over a perfect and pristine file will not only keep your costs down and ensure a successful project; it will also make you a star in the eyes of our team.

The Return of QR Codes
SCAN AND VIEW QR CODES AT LIGHTNING SPEEDS

If you haven’t used QR Codes recently, you will be pleasantly surprised at how much they’ve changed. Most smartphones now have a native QR Code scanner in their cameras (eliminating the need to download a QR app), and internet speeds have increased immensely, allowing users to scan and view QR Codes at lightning speeds.

QR Codes (short for “quick response”) are not only an excellent tool for marketing, but they are also used for movie tickets, plane tickets, official documents, social media, payment systems, and more. Here are a few ways to integrate QR Codes in your marketing:

  • Instantly access coupons

  • Conveniently re-order product

  • Link to a video tutorial or user manuals

  • Signup for a newsletter, loyalty plans, or sale notifications

  • Make payments

  • Follow social media accounts

  • Link to additional information or multimedia content, such as video, audio, and even AR and VR

If you’d like to use QR Codes in your next print project, we can help you ensure the ideal QR Code print size for any project, such as posters, postcards, labels, and more.

Mini Calendars
FRONT-OF-MIND AWARENESS YEAR-ROUND

Mini calendars are not only a handy reference tool for your customers and prospects, but they are also a creative way to ensure front-of-mind awareness year-round.

Here are a few ways to ensure your mini calendars get used and remembered:

  • Consider printing your mini calendar the same size as a standard business card (2”x3.5”), so they can easily fit in a pocket or wallet.

  • Offer a full year, at-a-glance layout on one side that makes it easy to look ahead to dates, and use the second side to promote your website, upcoming events or sales, and products or services.

  • Consider featuring inspirational quotes or helpful industry tips or resources that encourage users to look at your mini calendar again and again.

  • Consider re-designing your business card with a mini calendar on the backside.

  • Consider printing exclusive codes on your mini calendars that encourage recipients to check your website monthly to see if they are a winner.

  • Add a personal touch, such as including your photo with contact information.

Multiple Chrome Browser Profiles
MAINTAIN ORGANIZATION AND PERSONAL SETTINGS

Multiple Chrome browser profiles are helpful for families who share the same user account.

By having separate browser profiles, users can maintain organization and personal settings, such as bookmarks, passwords, search history, favorites, settings, and more. This allows multiple users to get the same Chrome experience every time they log in. Keep in mind that anyone using Chrome can switch to any other profile that’s signed in, so only share your device with people you trust.

Creating multiple browsers can also be handy if you use the same computer for work and personal use. Not only can it help declutter your online work experience (such as looking through unnecessary pages in your history to find something work related), but it can help you avoid unnecessary distractions, such as seeing fun bookmarked topics or websites you’d like to visit another time.

To create a new browser profile in Chrome, select the profile icon at the top right of Chrome. Choose Manage people, and Add person. Enter a name for this user profile and choose an image (optional). If you’d like to supervise the websites that this new profile visits, check “Control and view the websites this person visits.” To switch between Chrome user profiles, select the user’s image at the top of Chrome, and then pick a different profile from the list.

While separate browser profiles are great for ease of use and organization, keep in mind they don’t provide the same privacy protection as separate user accounts. This is because browser profiles aren’t password protected. If you want to secure your bookmarks and ensure others with access to your computer cannot log into your online accounts, you should create a separate user account for a higher level of security.
